Yes toenail fungi is ugly!
Believe it or not, toenail fungus is very common and begins as a white or yellow spot under the tip of fingernails or toenails. As the infection worsens the nail fungus can cause your nail to really discolour, become thick and crumbly at the edges. Sometimes it can even appear green, brown or black. It generally only affects one, or a few nails but usually not all of them.
The cause of toenail fungus is an overgrowth of fungi in, under, or on the nail. Fungi thrive in warm, moist environments and can spread from person to person, so it’s always best to wear clean footwear at public pools & showers. Be careful because you can also get it from sharing personal items such as towels and nail clippers. The same fungi that causes jock itch, athlete’s foot, and ringworm can cause nail infections and if you have athlete’s foot, the fungus can spread from your skin to your nails.
The only way the fungus can grow is if you feed it, fungus eats sugar. Candida is a yeast-like parasitic fungus that exists in everybody. Consuming grain (grains turn into sugar upon digestion) and sugar (all sugars including fruit, sweets, alcohol, etc.) feeds candida in the body. This is a normal bodily process, however with too much grain and sugar in the diet, it causes the candida to grow and replicate faster, resulting in an overpopulation of candida. When the body has too much of any given substance, it must purge the body. When candida is purging the body it is in the form of fungus. It may be a skin fungus or a nail fungus, among other fungi. Therefore, if you come in contact with a fungus, and your body has an overabundance of sugars it is very likely that you will develop some type of fungus.
The worst part of this nasty little fungus is that it looks horrible and people tend to want to hide it without realizing that it’s really quite easy to treat. Sometimes the condition doesn’t bother you, but sometimes it can be quite painful. Either way, it should be treated.
There are a few home remedies that you can try:
- Tea tree oil – apply topically
- Oil of oregano – internally
- Caprylic acid – internally
- Food grade hydrogen peroxide – internally
* Be aware of symptoms (stomach ache, rashes, etc.) These changes may indicate that your body has had enough. Do not consume peroxide for over 2 months. It is always best to listen to your body. If your body cannot handle it, cut back or cease peroxide consumption completely.
If a home remedy isn’t working for you, it’s time to visit a professional.
